Kovar is an iron nickel cobalt alloy developed for reliable glass to metal and ceramic to metal seals. Its controlled thermal expansion is compatible with borosilicate glass and alumina ceramics, helping limit thermal stress in hermetic assemblies. Vacuum melting and closely controlled chemistry support consistent processing. The alloy can be formed and machined, with sealing performance strongly influenced by surface preparation and heat treatment.
