446 stainless steel is a high chromium ferritic stainless steel grade designated as UNS S44600. It is specifically developed for high-temperature applications requiring excellent oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, and dimensional stability under severe thermal conditions. With a chromium content of approximately 23–27%, 446 stainless steel provides outstanding resistance to scaling and oxidation at temperatures significantly higher than conventional ferritic stainless steels.
The alloy contains chromium as the primary alloying element, with no significant nickel addition, resulting in a ferritic microstructure. The high chromium content forms a stable chromium oxide protective layer, which provides exceptional oxidation resistance in air and many combustion environments. The ferritic structure provides low thermal expansion, good thermal conductivity, and excellent resistance to thermal fatigue during repeated heating and cooling cycles.
446 stainless steel bars are normally supplied in annealed condition and cannot be hardened through heat treatment. The material maintains good mechanical stability at elevated temperatures and offers superior resistance to sulfur-containing gases, carburizing atmospheres, and oxidation environments. However, due to its high chromium content and ferritic structure, it has lower ductility and toughness compared with austenitic stainless steels, especially at room temperature.
446 stainless steel bars are widely used in furnace components, heat treatment equipment, boiler systems, combustion chambers, petrochemical processing equipment, and high-temperature industrial applications. It is particularly suitable for components exposed to continuous service temperatures up to approximately 1100°C where oxidation resistance and thermal stability are critical.
