Alloy 42 is an iron nickel controlled expansion alloy commonly marketed as Invar 42 or NILO 42. Approximately 42 percent nickel gives a low, relatively stable expansion rate over moderate temperatures. The alloy is widely used in electronic packaging and selected glass sealing assemblies. Glass compatibility, material condition and thermal processing must be specified carefully to obtain consistent sealing and dimensional performance.

Chemical composition

Element Weight percent
Ni 41.00 nominal
Fe Balance
C 0.05 max
Mn 0.40 nominal
Si 0.20 nominal

Carpenter Glass Sealing 42 type analysis for UNS K94100; nominal unless marked maximum. [4] Special Metals gives NILO 42 major elements as Ni 42 and Fe 58 nominal. These producer analyses are not a universal acceptance specification. Specify the supplier grade and sealing requirements. [2]
