Nitronic 60 stainless steel, also known as UNS S21800, Alloy 218, or XM-31 stainless steel, is a nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel specially developed for outstanding anti-galling, wear resistance, and high-strength performance. Unlike conventional austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316L, Nitronic 60 utilizes a unique alloy design containing high levels of manganese, silicon, and nitrogen to provide exceptional resistance to galling, friction, and adhesive wear.

The alloy contains approximately 17% chromium, 8% nickel, 8% manganese, 4% silicon, and controlled nitrogen additions. Chromium provides corrosion resistance, while the manganese-silicon-nitrogen combination significantly improves work hardening behavior, wear resistance, and resistance to metal-to-metal seizure. Nitrogen also strengthens the austenitic matrix, providing higher yield strength than conventional 300-series stainless steels.

Nitronic 60 stainless steel bars offer approximately twice the yield strength of 304 and 316L stainless steel in the annealed condition, while maintaining excellent ductility, toughness, and corrosion resistance. The material exhibits excellent resistance to galling, fretting, cavitation erosion, and adhesive wear, making it particularly suitable for components exposed to sliding contact or repeated mechanical movement.

The alloy remains fully austenitic and is generally non-magnetic in the solution annealed condition. It maintains good mechanical properties at elevated temperatures and provides oxidation resistance comparable to some higher-temperature stainless steels. Nitronic 60 can be supplied in solution annealed or cold-worked conditions, with cold working significantly increasing strength without requiring precipitation hardening.

Due to its excellent anti-galling performance, strength, and corrosion resistance, Nitronic 60 stainless steel bars are widely used in marine fasteners, valve components, pump shafts, bushings, wear rails, bearings, chemical processing equipment, aerospace components, food processing machinery, and high-performance mechanical assemblies.
