Nitronic 50 stainless steel, also known as XM-19 stainless steel, is a high-performance nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel grade designated as UNS S20910. It was developed to provide a unique combination of high mechanical strength, excellent corrosion resistance, superior wear resistance, and good toughness. Unlike conventional austenitic stainless steels, Nitronic 50 achieves high strength through nitrogen alloying while maintaining a fully austenitic microstructure.

The alloy contains approximately 21% chromium, 12% nickel, 5% manganese, and 2–4% molybdenum, with nitrogen additions. Chromium provides excellent resistance to general corrosion and oxidation, while molybdenum improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Nitrogen significantly increases yield strength, improves work hardening characteristics, and enhances resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking.

Nitronic 50 stainless steel bars provide approximately twice the yield strength of 316L stainless steel while maintaining excellent ductility and toughness. The alloy offers outstanding cavitation erosion resistance, galling resistance, and wear performance, making it suitable for applications involving sliding contact, high loads, and corrosive environments.

Compared with 304 and 316 stainless steels, Nitronic 50 provides improved corrosion resistance, higher strength, and better resistance to galling. Compared with duplex stainless steels, it maintains a fully austenitic structure, providing excellent low-temperature toughness and non-magnetic characteristics in many conditions.

Nitronic 50 stainless steel bars are normally supplied in solution annealed condition. Cold working can significantly increase strength due to nitrogen-enhanced work hardening. The material has good weldability and maintains corrosion resistance after proper welding procedures.

Due to its combination of strength, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and toughness, Nitronic 50 stainless steel bars are widely used in marine equipment, valve components, pump shafts, fasteners, aerospace parts, chemical processing equipment, food processing machinery, and high-performance mechanical applications.
