430 stainless steel is a ferritic chromium stainless steel grade designated as UNS S43000. It is one of the most widely used ferritic stainless steels due to its combination of good corrosion resistance, excellent formability, attractive surface finish, and economical performance. Unlike austenitic stainless steels such as 304, 430 stainless steel contains little or no nickel, making it a cost-effective material for applications requiring moderate corrosion resistance and good mechanical stability.

The alloy contains chromium as the primary alloying element, typically around 16–18%, which provides corrosion resistance through the formation of a protective chromium oxide passive film. The ferritic microstructure gives 430 stainless steel excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, good thermal conductivity, and a low coefficient of thermal expansion. It also provides good resistance to oxidation at elevated temperatures, although its high-temperature strength is lower than stabilized austenitic stainless steels.

430 stainless steel bars are normally supplied in annealed condition and cannot be hardened by conventional heat treatment. The material offers good machinability, moderate ductility, and excellent dimensional stability. It can be polished to achieve a bright surface finish and is widely used where both functional performance and appearance are important. Welding is possible, but precautions may be required to maintain ductility and corrosion resistance in welded areas.

Due to its balance of corrosion resistance, fabrication performance, and cost efficiency, 430 stainless steel bars are widely used in architectural components, kitchen equipment, automotive trim parts, appliance components, decorative applications, industrial machinery, and general engineering products. It is especially suitable for indoor and mildly corrosive environments where high strength and extreme corrosion resistance are not required.
