316 and 316L are molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steels developed for improved resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-containing environments. 316L has a lower carbon level and is commonly selected for welded piping and process equipment. These grades are widely specified for chemical processing, marine service, food processing, pharmaceutical systems and corrosive industrial media.
