2024 Aluminum Bar and Rod

Grade: 2024

Size:

Cold drawn: 2mm-12mm

Extruded: 6mm-400mm

Standard: ASTM, AMS, BS etc.

2024 is a heat treatable aluminum copper magnesium alloy selected for high strength and fatigue performance. Bar and rod are widely used as stock for aerospace fittings and precision machined components. Naturally aged T4 and T351 conditions combine useful ductility with strength, while artificially aged conditions increase yield strength. Corrosion resistance is lower than that of many 5xxx and 6xxx grades, making protective finishes important. Conventional fusion welding is generally avoided in critical structures because of cracking and strength loss.

Chemical composition

Element Mass percent Element Mass percent
Si 0.50 Fe 0.50
Cu 3.8–4.9 Mn 0.30–0.9

Zn 0.25 Ti 0.15
Additional — Others each / total 0.05 / 0.15
Al Remainder

Mechanical properties by temper

Temper Size or basis UTS MPa Yield MPa Elongation %

T4 / T351 Typical rod/bar 469 324 19
T6 Typical rod/bar 476 393 10
T851 Typical rod/bar 482 448 7

Application areas

  • Aircraft fittings and structural machined components
  • Fatigue loaded links and mechanical parts
  • Precision aerospace fasteners and hardware to qualified drawings
