AL-6XN stainless steel is a high-performance super-austenitic stainless steel grade designated as UNS N08367. It was specifically developed for applications requiring exceptional resistance to chloride-induced corrosion, pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. The alloy belongs to the 6% molybdenum super-austenitic stainless steel family and provides corrosion resistance far beyond conventional stainless steels such as 316L and many duplex stainless steels.
The alloy contains approximately 20–22% chromium, 23.5–25.5% nickel, 6–7% molybdenum, and nitrogen additions. The high nickel content improves resistance to stress corrosion cracking and stabilizes the fully austenitic structure, while molybdenum provides outstanding resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. Nitrogen increases strength and further enhances corrosion resistance. The combination of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen results in a high Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN), typically above 45.
AL-6XN stainless steel bars provide excellent mechanical strength, superior toughness, and outstanding corrosion resistance in severe environments such as seawater, brine, chemical processing solutions, and acidic chloride-containing media. Compared with 316L stainless steel, AL-6XN offers significantly improved resistance to localized corrosion and higher strength. Compared with 904L stainless steel, it provides higher molybdenum content and better chloride corrosion performance.
The material maintains a fully austenitic microstructure, offering excellent weldability, ductility, and impact toughness. AL-6XN stainless steel bars are normally supplied in solution annealed condition to optimize corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Proper fabrication procedures are recommended to preserve the alloy’s high corrosion performance.
Due to its outstanding seawater resistance and high mechanical performance, AL-6XN stainless steel bars are widely used in desalination plants, offshore oil and gas equipment, chemical processing systems, heat exchangers, flue gas desulfurization equipment, marine piping systems, pharmaceutical equipment, food processing equipment, and power generation applications.
