2205 duplex stainless steel is one of the most widely used duplex stainless steel grades, designated as UNS S32205 and UNS S31803. It combines the advantages of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels by having a dual-phase microstructure consisting of approximately equal proportions of austenite and ferrite. This unique structure provides an excellent combination of high strength, superior corrosion resistance, and good toughness.
The alloy contains approximately 22% chromium, 5% nickel, and 3% molybdenum, with controlled nitrogen addition. Chromium provides excellent resistance to general corrosion and oxidation, while molybdenum and nitrogen significantly improve resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-containing environments. The duplex structure provides significantly higher yield strength than conventional austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316.
2205 duplex stainless steel bars offer excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, chloride-induced corrosion, and erosion corrosion. Compared with 316L stainless steel, 2205 provides higher mechanical strength and improved resistance to localized corrosion while often allowing reduced material thickness in engineering applications. The nitrogen content enhances phase balance, strength, and corrosion resistance.
2205 stainless steel bars are normally supplied in solution annealed condition to maintain the optimal balance between ferrite and austenite phases. The material has good weldability when proper procedures are followed, although heat input control is important to maintain the required duplex microstructure.
Due to its high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and cost efficiency, 2205 duplex stainless steel bars are widely used in oil and gas equipment, chemical processing systems, marine structures, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, desalination plants, pulp and paper equipment, and industrial piping systems.
