416 stainless steel is a free-machining martensitic chromium stainless steel grade designated as UNS S41600. It is specifically developed to provide excellent machinability while maintaining the strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance characteristics of martensitic stainless steels. With the addition of sulfur, 416 stainless steel offers significantly improved machining performance compared with conventional 410 stainless steel, making it one of the most widely used free-machining stainless steel grades.
The alloy contains chromium as the primary corrosion-resistant element, which forms a passive chromium oxide layer that provides resistance to atmospheric corrosion and mild chemical environments. The sulfur addition creates manganese sulfide inclusions within the microstructure, reducing cutting forces, improving chip breaking, and extending tool life during machining operations. However, the sulfur content slightly reduces corrosion resistance and toughness compared with non-free-machining grades.
416 stainless steel bars are normally supplied in annealed condition for machining and can be hardened through quenching and tempering processes to achieve higher strength and hardness. After heat treatment, the material provides good wear resistance, dimensional stability, and mechanical strength. It has excellent machinability in the annealed condition and can be readily turned, drilled, milled, and threaded.
Due to its excellent machining performance and moderate corrosion resistance, 416 stainless steel bars are widely used in automatic screw machine components, shafts, gears, valves, pumps, fasteners, bushings, fittings, and precision mechanical parts. It is especially suitable for high-volume production applications where machining efficiency and dimensional accuracy are important.
