317L stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel grade with low carbon content, designated as UNS S31703. It is an enhanced version of 316L stainless steel, developed with higher chromium, nickel, and molybdenum contents to provide superior corrosion resistance, especially in aggressive chemical environments. The low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation during welding, improving resistance to intergranular corrosion after fabrication and welding operations.
The alloy contains increased levels of chromium, nickel, and molybdenum compared with conventional 316L stainless steel. Chromium provides excellent general corrosion resistance through the formation of a passive oxide layer. Nickel maintains the stable austenitic structure and improves toughness and ductility. The higher molybdenum content significantly enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-containing solutions, acids, and chemical processing environments.
317L stainless steel bars are normally supplied in solution annealed condition and can be manufactured through hot rolling, cold drawing, peeling, grinding, and precision machining processes. The material offers excellent weldability, good formability, high toughness, and reliable performance under severe service conditions. It maintains good mechanical properties at both ambient and elevated temperatures.
Due to its outstanding corrosion resistance and durability, 317L stainless steel bars are widely used in chemical processing equipment, pulp and paper industries, pharmaceutical machinery, pollution control systems, marine applications, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and industrial piping systems. It is especially suitable for environments where improved corrosion resistance compared with 316L stainless steel is required.
