316N stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel grade with controlled nitrogen addition, identified as UNS S31651. It is a modified version of 316 stainless steel designed to provide higher mechanical strength while maintaining excellent corrosion resistance. The addition of nitrogen improves the strength of the austenitic structure, especially the yield strength, without significantly reducing ductility and toughness.
The alloy contains chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and nitrogen as the main alloying elements. Chromium provides general corrosion resistance by forming a stable passive oxide film, while nickel stabilizes the austenitic structure and improves toughness. The molybdenum content enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-containing environments such as seawater and chemical processing applications. Nitrogen further improves resistance to localized corrosion and increases mechanical performance.
316N stainless steel bars are normally supplied in solution annealed condition and can be manufactured through hot rolling, cold drawing, peeling, grinding, or precision machining processes. The material offers excellent weldability, good toughness at low temperatures, and reliable performance under demanding service conditions.
Due to its combination of corrosion resistance and increased strength, 316N stainless steel bars are widely used in chemical equipment, marine engineering, pressure vessels, pharmaceutical machinery, heat exchangers, offshore structures, and high-strength stainless steel components. It is especially suitable for applications requiring improved mechanical properties compared with conventional 316 stainless steel.
