429 stainless steel is a ferritic chromium stainless steel grade designated as UNS S42900. It was developed as a modified version of 430 stainless steel, offering improved corrosion resistance and mechanical properties through controlled alloying. As a ferritic stainless steel, 429 stainless steel contains a chromium-based microstructure that provides good resistance to atmospheric corrosion, oxidation, and many industrial environments while maintaining excellent dimensional stability.

The alloy contains chromium as the primary alloying element, which forms a protective chromium oxide passive layer that provides corrosion resistance. Compared with lower chromium ferritic grades, the higher chromium content improves resistance to oxidation and general corrosion. The ferritic structure provides good thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion, and resistance to stress corrosion cracking in chloride-containing environments compared with austenitic stainless steels.

429 stainless steel bars are normally supplied in annealed condition and cannot be significantly hardened by heat treatment. The material offers good machinability, moderate ductility, and stable mechanical performance at elevated temperatures. It can be fabricated by forming, machining, and welding processes; however, proper welding procedures are recommended to maintain corrosion resistance and avoid excessive grain growth in the heat-affected zone.

Due to its combination of corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and economical performance, 429 stainless steel bars are widely used in automotive exhaust components, heat exchangers, industrial equipment, architectural applications, appliance parts, and general engineering components. It is suitable for applications requiring moderate corrosion resistance, good oxidation resistance, and long-term dimensional stability.
