405 stainless steel is a ferritic chromium stainless steel grade designated as UNS S40500. It is a modified version of 410 stainless steel, specifically developed with controlled aluminum addition to improve welding characteristics and reduce the risk of hardening after welding. Unlike austenitic stainless steels, 405 stainless steel has a ferritic microstructure, providing good resistance to oxidation, thermal cycling, and atmospheric corrosion.

The alloy contains chromium as the primary alloying element, which provides corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance by forming a stable chromium oxide passive layer on the surface. The addition of aluminum helps stabilize the ferritic structure and improves resistance to embrittlement after high-temperature exposure. The low carbon content minimizes the formation of martensitic structures, allowing the material to maintain good ductility and toughness after welding.

405 stainless steel bars offer good machinability, moderate corrosion resistance, and excellent dimensional stability at elevated temperatures. The material is not normally hardened by heat treatment and is generally supplied in annealed condition. It provides good resistance to scaling at temperatures up to approximately 700°C and maintains stable performance in high-temperature environments.

405 stainless steel bars are widely used in industrial applications requiring good oxidation resistance, weldability, and moderate corrosion resistance. Typical applications include steam turbine components, heat exchangers, furnace parts, petroleum processing equipment, welding structures, and high-temperature mechanical components. The alloy is especially suitable where welded fabrication and dimensional stability are more important than extremely high corrosion resistance.
